When babies should visit a dentist for the first time?

My babygirl has 7 teeth for the moment and 7 more are growing right now. Our pediatrician told us visit dentist and use a calming gel.

Now Eva already has her toothbrush and even tries to clean her teeth herself. But when she got her first tooth I hesitated whether we should visit dentist or we can wait. And now I know the answer. And I am glad to share it.

First thing I have to admit is that teething is painful for babies. And it brings a lot of discomfort. Some children easily cope with it, others become very nervous. And it is a good reason to visit a dentist. Specialists recommend doing it when the 1st tooth appears or at child’s first birthday. Some babies can have their first tooth at 3-4 months. Others can stay toothless even by their first birthday. In the second case visiting dentist is necessary. And from my life experience I can say that sooner is way much better than later. You can escape many problems in future if you take care of baby’s tooth from the very beginning.

The first visit to the dentist will help you with answering such questions as when we should wait for the first tooth, which food and drink may be harmful for teeth, how to pick the right brush for baby’s teeth and what kind of toothpaste to use. The doctor also will give you some tips to avoid tooth decay.

Usually the first visit to the stomatologist lasts from 15 to 30 minutes. Depending on baby’s age, it can include following things:

  • Examination of child’s teeth, jaw, gums, bite and oral tissues to observe any possible problem areas and monitor grows and development of every tooth. Also a doctor can offer gentle cleaning to remove plague, tartar and stains if it is necessary.
  • X-rays
  • Teaching on proper care of child’s teeth. The dentist will show you how t brush child’s teeth and tell you what else you should do to keep them healthy
  • Evaluation of the need for the fluoride. Water ad wipes with ftuoride can be very useful for some little dentist’s patients.

Proper care for child’s teeth during first years can help him avoid many dental problems in the future, so don’t wait too long to visit the doctor. Especially if your child has some teeth and still wakes up to have a meal in the middle of the night. Milk can be a good area for corrosive bacteria.

Preventing cavities helps to reduce the risk of poor cardiovascular condition, diabetes, and other illnesses according to Dr. Maria A. Smith, DMD, MAGD. Dental visits are a first line of defense against a range of diseases, as the first signs of many illnesses are often revealed in the mouth.

So, as you can see, visiting the dentist from the beginning of child ‘s life is important. And it is also important to inculcate a habit of taking good oral care for his long healthy life.
